Yes, I know that it's been a while since my last update, but there was a good reason for my absence: vaycay with the parents!
About the vacation...I can sum it up in one word: WOW! I had the opportunity to give my parents a small taste of why I love living in Southern Africa. Many of the things that I endlessly ramble on and on about over Skype, they were able to experience...including my running. You remember that I somewhat jokingly mentioned that, as a part of their tour, they could perhaps follow behind me in the car and watch me run:
Even though I was on a superduper, maxed out family vacation, I still made time to run when I could. For instance, during layovers in Johannesburg, my mother and I hit the gym (me running and her walking)! The gym was beautiful: full set of shiny weights, an all in one weight machine, three finely tuned treadmills, elliptical machine, three stationary bikes, yoga mats...the works!
In the game reserve, however, running was a no-go. Especially when there were creatures lurking around the bend:
Zambia, however, was a different story! My hotel sat within a large compound right on the banks of the Zambizi River and boasted a brilliant view of Victoria Falls. If I could wake up or end the day with runs filled with sites like these every day, well then...
Cape Town, perhaps being the best place to run, was more about waking up to activity filled days, late nights out on the town, hair cuts, and eating fresh seafood (rather than eating prawns that have been dead for a while before it hits my plate...wink wink Lesotho)!...
Now that my much needed respite is coming to an end, it's time to get back to the realities of life: work, responsibilities, and hardcore pavement pounding. Within the next few days, I need to get my act together and make up for the 16 mile long run that wasn't and the 2 extra holiday kilograms that were!
So, until next time...one foot in front of the other...(you know the rest, but just in case you forgot)...KEEP IT MOVIN'!!!!
Yours in (vaycay recovery) training,
Dani
P.S...THANKS MOM & DAD!!!!
